Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a lower cost if I contact the insurer directly?

No. Canopy is able to offer the insurers' "standard" premiums, so they are the same whether you
start your policy through Canopy or head to the insurer. Buying your insurance through us means
you not only get your insurance cover – you also get ongoing assistance and advice whenever you
need it, absolutely free of charge.

Does Canopy help with any ongoing service?

Canopy’s advisers are dedicated to understanding your individual needs and building a lifetime
relationship with you, your family (and/or) business partners. We're here to help with questions,
changes to your cover, and of course claims. You will have our personal support, from quote to claim.

What happens if a claim has to be made?

If you need to make a claim, please contact us immediately. Depending on the nature of the claim,
you will be required to supply certain information to process it, including a completed claim form,
a death certificate, your policy document, coroner’s reports, or other material as required by the
insurer. Your Canopy adviser can help with this. For medical insurance claims, most of our insurers
allow pre-approval of claims, so please contact us as soon as your doctor recommends a procedure.

Are there other benefits I can add to my life insurance application?

Yes. You can also add the capacity to make claims on your policy for disablement, major illnesses
and redundancy. We can talk you through this process.

Will I need to have a medical exam, or see my doctor?

The majority of applicants are accepted based on the information they provide in their declaration
of health. From time to time, with your permission the insurer will write to your doctor for more detailed
information. This is likely to involve a visit to your home or work by a registered nurse who’ll collect blood and other samples, ask you about health issues you outlined in your application, and perform a basic examination. We will let you know if this is
required and in most cases there is no charge.

Do I have to provide health evidence?

With the exception of your application answers, you are unlikely to be asked for more health evidence.
Insurers usually contact your GP directly for health information. It is very important that you disclose
all relevant health information on your application, to ensure successful future claims.

How should I choose a policy?

With decades of experience, we can help you to work out your priorities when it comes to insurance
and can advise you on the very best insurer for your individual situation.  We will always consider price,
but other important things to think about include the financial strength of the insurer and the quality
of the policy. We always ensure that your policy is relevant to your individual situation.

What is the cost of using an adviser from Canopy?

Our service is free.

What payment options do I have?

All our insurers allow weekly and monthly premium payment, by either credit card or direct debit. We have a
variety of payment options - some also have fortnightly, quarterly, half-annual and annual premiums. Please contact
your Canopy adviser if you’re interested in changing your payment options.

When is my first payment due?

Most insurers give you the ability to specify the date in the month you’d like your regular payment
processed. Once your policy is accepted and issued by the insurer, your first premium becomes due
within the following two-three weeks.

Will my premium go up in the future?

Yes, your premium increases each year in line with your age and (if you have selected this option), inflation.
Some insurers have an option to pay a higher premium from the start, which stays the same for a set period
of time (e.g. five years, ten years or even until age 65 and beyond). Your Canopy adviser can talk you through
how this could save you money in the long term.

What’s a Free Look Period?

A Free Look Period is required by law, and allows you to review your policy upon its receipt by you to make sure
it’s suitable for you. If you choose not to proceed with your policy during the free look period, the premium
you have paid will be refunded, and the policy cancelled.

What happens if I stop paying premiums?

Your insurance will be kept in force based on your regular payments. If you stop making payments you're no
longer covered but you may be able to re-start your policy again later (subject to conditions.) If you are having
trouble paying your premiums please contact your Canopy adviser, we can help ensure you keep your
cover if possible.

How does smoking affect my premium?

People who smoke will have to pay a higher insurance premium.  Many people are surprised that insurers
often consider a person who smokes even just a few times a week or month to be a smoker. If you successfully
quit smoking for at least 12 months you are able to apply to have your premium reduced; contact your Canopy
adviser and we can help you with this.
